White Space Experience

When building a web page of a site, the main concept is we consider how to fill the page with interesting layout. Whether it be with text, graphics, backgrounds, animation and so forth. For some reason it's a great idea to get as much on a page as possible.

In a page layout and illustration, white space is often referred as negative space. It's the portion of a place left unmarked: the space between graphics, margins, gutters, space between columns, space between lines of type or figures and objects drawn or depicted. The term arises from graphic design practice, where printing processes generally use white paper.

When space is at a premium, such as some types of magazine, newspaper, and yellow pages advertising, white space is limited in order to get as much vital information on to the page as possible. A page crammed full of text or graphics with very little white space runs the risk of appearing busy, cluttered, and is typically difficult to read. Some designs compensate for this problem through the careful use of leading and typeface.

The use of white space can give a classic, elegant, or rich appearance. For example, upscale brands often use ad layouts with little text and a lot of white space.

In websites, white space helps shift your eyes around so you can take in the full elements of the page design. This creates emphasis on the text or design objects so as to separate them from each other. It helps reduce the clutter. One thing about having excessive spacing is even though it's an area that has nothing in its space, it doesn't necessarily have to be the color white.

The additional space is used to help increase the legibility of the web page. It simply makes it easier to read and helps a person to grasp the concepts. A cluttered page with too many text, graphic images, flash animations, ads, etc., can be difficult to read because there is too much information all together. It's difficult to read, can create distorted comprehension of the subject and can be considered messy.

White space can set the tone. The use of white space is often described as minimalist. Minimalist is a description of simplicity. And simplicity is one of the most fundamental point in design. By eliminating all non-essential forms, features or concepts, one can give more usable information right to the target audience without any necessary drama.
