Apple Launches A Blog To Showcase Its Machine Learning Journals

Apple Machine Learning Journal

Like some others in the competition, Apple is also into machine learning. The Cupertino-based company has been investing heavily in the field just to make the technology and everything that comes with it better.

But Apple is a pretty isolated company. It has long been known for its proprietary products with technologies it preferred to keep to itself. But in terms of AI and machine learning, it's thinking otherwise.

With that in mind, Apple didn't think to keep the knowledge to itself as the company has launched a blog dubbed the 'Apple Machine Learning Journal', dedicated to show off its research into the technology.

This blog however, is basically aimed at people to study AI. For Apple, this is somehow unusual for it to share its research - even if it's a glimpse of summary.

In its introductory post, Apple said that:

"Welcome to the Apple Machine Learning Journal. Here, you can read posts written by Apple engineers about their work using machine learning technologies to help build innovative products for millions of people around the world. If you’re a machine learning researcher or student, an engineer or developer, we’d love to hear your questions and feedback."

Competitors like Google, Microsoft and Facebook are also into machine learning and AI. They have all shared more or less about what they have to the public associated with the field. They also maintain blogs where they publish updates in connection with academic papers and projects.

With Apple Machine Learning Journal, it's Apple's way to be one of the crowd, in its own way. It's like showing the world that Apple is more into AI than just Siri.

Apple encourages those interested in machine learning to contact the company at an email address for its new blog.

Apple Machine Learning Journal

It all began in December 2016. At that time, Apple's artificial intelligence team released its first research paper, which had the same focus on advanced image recognition as the first volume of the Apple Machine Learning Journal does.

Apple Machine Learning Journal represents another sign of Apple's interest in being seen as an active player in artificial intelligence research.

During an AI conference in Barcelona in 2016, the company's head of machine learning Russ Salakhutdinov provided a peek behind the scenes of some of Apple's initiatives in these fields, including health and vital signs, volumetric detection of LiDAR, prediction with structured outputs, image processing and colorization, intelligent assistant and language modeling, and activity recognition, all of which could be potential subjects for its research papers and blog posts.
