Microsoft Introduces AirDrop-Like Feature For iPhone Users To Send Files To Windows

Introducing features to enhance one's own product is crucial, even when the enhancement involves a rival's product.

Apple has what it calls the 'AirDrop' feature, which is a file-sharing feature that allows users to transfer files wirelessly between Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. It uses a combination of Bluetooth (for device discovery) and Wi-Fi (for fast data transfer) to share photos, videos, documents, and more.

The feature is fast, and is also secure because transfers are encrypted for privacy.

It's also convenient because it requires no internet connection.

For Apple users, it's a must-use feature in a world where files should be easily transferred from one device to another.

And here, Microsoft wants to be one of those devices.

This is where its 'Phone Link' feature plays its role.

In a blog post, Microsoft said that:

"Hello Windows Insiders,

Today we are beginning to gradually roll out the ability to seamlessly share files between your iPhone® and Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC when they are connected via Phone Link and the Link to Windows app."

It all began back in 2023, when Microsoft announced Windows Phone Link support for Apple's iOS.

Phone Link is a Windows app from Microsoft that lets users connect their phone, whether iOS or Android, to their PC wirelessly.

Once paired, users can see their notifications and even answer calls from their PC.

This time, the company is expanding the feature to include file sharing as well.

On Windows, users will see their phone as an option when they click to share a file. On iOS, the Link to Windows app will appear as a sharing extension.

To use this feature, users need to meet the following requirements:

  1. An iPhone that is running iOS 16 or higher.
  2. The Link to Windows app on their iPhone (version 1.24112.73 or higher).
  3. Phone Link version 1.24112.89.0 or higher.
  4. Registered for the Windows Insider Program.

Usually, Windows PCs and iPhones don't always get along, at least not when compared to the connection between Android devices and Windows computers.

But this feature should help gap in the bridge between Windows and iOS, giving users of the two devices the ability to share files seamlessly.
