Amazon

14/10/1995

The company was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1993 as an offline bookstore.

Bezos made his home's garage in Washington State as Amazon's first ever store. That was before Bezos incorporated it as a company with the name Cadabra in July 1994.

The company was founded as a result of what Jeff Bezos called his "regret minimization framework," which described his efforts to fend off any regrets for not participating sooner in the internet business boom during that time. In 1994, Bezos was a vice-president of D. E. Shaw & Co., a Wall Street firm, before retiring and started working on a business plan.

Amazon's website went online as amazon.com in 1995. The name "Amazon" was chosen as the company's name, renamed after the Amazon River, one of the largest rivers in the world, which in turn was named after the Amazons, the legendary nation of female warriors in Greek mythology.

The site started selling the books Bezos' had when he was a broker, but soon diversified, selling DVDs, CDs, MP3 downloads, software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and jewelry.
