Social media is where many of the internet's trends happen.

When something is unique, has never been done, fun, and viral inducing, that thing can become a 'challenge'.

Knowing that many social media users are always crazy about new challenges, users are brainstorming for new ideas, in order to create new challenges that are even more 'challenging' than the ones before.

And this time, in a TikTok challenge that went horribly wrong, a 12-year-old boy in Vigyan Nagar, Rajasthan, India, ended his life by hanging himself with a metal chain.

The boy's body was found hanging, naked, the next morning in his family home's bathroom by his family members.

The boy was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

The boy was only 12 years old when he died by hanging himself in a bathroom.

The night before, the boy was found wearing mangalsutra (an ornament worn by Hindu married women) and bangles.

He borrowed these items from his mother, late before she went to bed.

The next morning, the boy who reportedly was a morning person, didn't show up. His family called him, and no one answered.

This was when the family became suspicious about the boy's whereabouts.

But when they opened the bathroom door, they were horrified.

"He was wearing mangalsutra and bangles, and was wearing a noose made from chains and was found hanging. He was using TikTok the entire night," his father was quoted saying to India Today.

The boy’s father said that the state he was found in, was exactly as described in the TikTok challenge.

"If it was not for TikTok then my child would have been alive," he added.

The boy accidentally killed himself, for the sake of a TikTok video.

"The initial investigation suggested that the boy might have killed himself accidentally while probably preparing to make a video on TikTok," said Station House Officer Mumindra Singh, adding that the actual reason of death would only be known after receiving the autopsy report.

TikTok has caused quite a few deaths in the country, with many youngsters trying to make unique videos, or take part in certain challenges.

The increased addiction to the China-based app had the Madras High Court calling for the app's ban.

TikTok released a statement saying that it does not endorse any of the challenge that happens to be spreading on its platform.

"This is a very concerning incident. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased. At TikTok, we are committed to maintaining a safe and positive in-app environment for our users, while encouraging them to showcase their creativity. In line with this, we would like to confirm that there is no such hashtag challenge or activity that TikTok is promoting on its app."

"TikTok in no way endorses, promotes or encourages its users to engage in any behaviour that might cause harm to oneself or anyone else either via challenges or content published. We have a zero tolerance policy on content and behaviour that is against our Community Guidelines."
