Google Image Search Introduced, Following Jennifer Lopez's Green Versace Dress

12/07/2001

During the 42nd Grammy Awards ceremony on February 23, 2000, American celebrity and actress Jennifer Lopez wore a green Versace silk chiffon dress.

The striking design was made from sheer fabric, printed with a tropical leaf and bamboo pattern. The dress was then cut with a very low neckline that extended well past Lopez's navel, while leaving the waist of the dress studded with citrines, loosely fastened with a sparkly brooch near her crotch.

The dress then drooped behind her on the floor, open at the back.

And with its cut along the front of the legs, it seems like the celebrity-singer was wearing a bath robe made of see-through silk.

Designed by Donatella Versace, it has been described as "jungle green", "sea green" or "tropical" green, with touches of blue for a more exotic appearance.

This garment instantly received global media coverage.

Among other dresses, Lopez's dress has been one of the most high-profile dresses that made the designer Versace a very popular brand.

The reception for the dress was extremely well, as it was covered and discussed in many fashion and entertainment for weeks after the 42nd Grammy Awards ceremony.

There were even some dedicated television specials and magazine covers to feature Jennifer Lopez and that green dress of her.

Because the original images of Lopez and the green dress were made available on the Grammy's website, people were downloading the images 642,917 times in just 24 hours after the event.

The hype surprised even Lopez.

In an interview, she said that "It was a nice dress," adding that she "had no idea it was going to become such a big deal."

The affect of this dress was so huge, that it was even described as a turning point for designer Donatella Versace's career after the death of her brother, Gianni Versace.

"It was an unexpected success. The next day she [Jennifer Lopez] was everywhere and people were talking about her in that dress. It was one of those moments like the one that Gianni [Versace] had with Elizabeth Hurley and clothes-pins," she said, adding that the dress has been referred to many times as "notorious" and "infamous" because of its boldness.

Lopez stole the show not only because of her dress, but because she was the one who presented the Best R&B Album award with actor David Duchovny, and also because she was nominated for a Best Dance Recording GRAMMY for "Let's Get Loud", the single that was featured on her 1999 debut album.

Due to the fact that people go to the internet to look for things, and Google is the most popular search engine around, the Jennifer Lopez hype because of her dress quickly sparked an idea for the company.

In the year 2000, Google Search results were limited to simple pages of text with links.

But realizing that an image search was required to answer "the most popular search query" they had seen to that date, the team at Google began working to improve the search engine, and created Google Image Search.

The news about this was first revealed in January 2015, by Google's President Eric Schmidt.

At that time, he cited the massive attention to this Lopez's dress as a motivation for the creation of Google Images Search.

Google Image Search was initially launched to the public on July 12, 2001.
