'It's Over 9000!': From An Anime Shout To Meme And Internet Immortality

17/10/2006

Dragon Ball Z (DBZ) is a landmark Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation.

As part of the larger Dragon Ball media franchise, it serves as the direct sequel to the original Dragon Ball series that aired in 1986. While the first series followed the early adventures of Son Goku as a child, Dragon Ball Z picks up with Goku as an adult and delves into more intense battles, powerful transformations, and high-stakes story arcs that defined the genre for decades.

The show is based on the latter portion of Akira Toriyama’s iconic Dragon Ball manga, specifically adapting chapters 195 through 519. These arcs include the arrival of the Saiyans, the rise of Frieza, the android and Cell saga, and the final battles with Majin Buu—each more explosive than the last. With its unique blend of martial arts, sci-fi, and over-the-top power scaling, DBZ set the standard for what modern action anime would become.

Originally airing on Fuji TV in Japan from April 1989 to January 1996, the series quickly gained popularity and was dubbed into dozens of languages for international audiences.

Its cultural impact continues to echo in everything from memes and video games to modern anime and internet culture, with "It’s Over 9000!" standing as one of its most unforgettable gifts to the web.

It's over 9000!

That phrase is actually a simple phrase, but somehow exploded into internet legend.

In the Dragon Ball universe, every living being possesses a life energy called ki. Some warriors or fighters have higher kis than others, while elites are even higher. In other words, ki is like a measurement of power, and in this case, it's used to determine the Power Level or Battle Power of someone.

In Dragon Ball Z, viewers are introduced to a device called a scouter, which alien soldiers under the rule of the galactic tyrant Frieza use. These devices are wearables, taking the form of a single-lens heads-up display (HUD) device that resembles a futuristic monocle crossed with a Bluetooth headset, clipped over one eye and extending to the ear.

These scouters provide numerical readings of Power Levels by scanning targets. However, these scouters aren’t foolproof. Skilled fighters can mask or suppress their ki, giving the illusion of being weaker than they truly are.

One of the most iconic moments in the franchise—and in anime history—comes during the episode titled "The Return of Goku". After undergoing intense training in the afterlife, Goku returns to Earth to confront the Saiyan invaders, Vegeta and Nappa.

Upon arrival, he learns that his friends—Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo—have all been killed by the Saiyans. Fueled by rage and determination, Goku unleashes a massive surge of energy as he prepares for battle.

Vegeta, monitoring the situation through his scouter, is stunned by Goku’s sudden power spike. When Nappa asks for a reading on Goku’s strength, Vegeta shouts the now legendary line: “It’s over 9000!” before crushing his scouter in disbelief.

Interestingly, the original Japanese version actually had Vegeta say, “It’s over 8000,” but the English dubbing team at Ocean Studios altered the line to “9000.”

The reason for the change is still debated—some say it was simply because “9000” sounded more dramatic in English, while others believe it was to better match the character’s mouth movements during the scene.

Although the episode aired years earlier, the phrase didn’t gain viral traction until 2006, when a YouTube user named Kajetokun uploaded an edited version of the scene.

Titled “Over 9000!!!”, the video amped up Vegeta’s voice and visuals to ridiculous extremes, creating a hilarious, over-the-top experience.

That clip struck a chord with early internet users, especially anime fans, and quickly spread across forums, message boards, and YouTube comments like wildfire.

The meme’s virality came from its sheer absurdity.

The phrase “over 9000” is comically vague and arbitrary—it’s not a round number, not a particularly high figure in the grand scheme of things, and yet it sounds huge in the context of the show. Add in Brian Drummond’s intense voice acting and the fact that it came from a beloved anime series, and the result was meme gold.

Fans started using the phrase to jokingly describe anything excessively strong, powerful, or extreme—whether it was a video game character, an internet stat, or even someone's mood.

Son Goku vs. Vegeta
In the epic showdown between the two Saiyans, Son Goku (left) began with a power level of about 8,000, which surged to over 9,000 as his anger flared upon learning of his fallen friends. At his peak, Goku briefly reached 24,000 using his Kaioken technique. Vegeta (right) maintained a steady power level of around 18,000, but when he transformed into his terrifying Great Ape form, his strength multiplied tenfold to 180,000.

Over time, “It’s over 9000!” escaped the confines of anime culture and found its way into broader internet slang.

It was used in gaming forums, as ironic replies on Reddit and 4chan, printed on T-shirts, and even referenced in mainstream media like Robot Chicken and The Tonight Show. It became a universal signal for something ludicrously over-the-top—and a subtle nod to fellow internet veterans.

There’s also a beautiful irony at play here.

The meme that mocks excessive power originated from a franchise obsessed with power levels, where characters constantly scream, transform, and fight across galaxies. It also marked a fascinating moment in internet history, when fan-made content like a YouTube edit could single-handedly resurrect and redefine a forgotten piece of pop culture.

Today, the phrase lives on. Whether someone’s joking about CPU temps, follower counts, or emotional drama, “It’s over 9000!” remains a quick, hilarious shorthand.

It has outlived most memes from its era, evolving from an anime in-joke into a permanent fixture in the online lexicon. What started as a random dub line has become a timeless piece of digital folklore—a reminder that the internet always rewards the ridiculous, especially when it’s delivered with a clenched fist and a crushed scouter.
