A quiet Monday commute through the Crossroads of the World exploded into nightmare footage that the entire internet could not stop watching.
Just after 4:20 p.m. on August 31, a woman in a pink top pulled two kitchen knives from a red Target bag on Seventh Avenue and stabbed two complete strangers she encountered on the street in the span of less than a minute.
The first was a 68-year-old Rhode Island visitor named Tak Kam, waiting at a crosswalk with his wife after leaving the subway. Seconds later, after walking north, she plunged a blade into the abdomen of 32-year-old Bank of America vice president Erin Piacenti, a new mother walking home after her first day back from maternity leave.
Then the cameras started rolling and the clip that followed became inescapable.
Erin Piacenti had pretty much of her life riding in her favor.
She had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 and from Fordham University School of Law in 2021, where she met her husband Frank. The couple married in August 2024, bought their first home in 2025 in Chester, New Jersey. The couple had only celebrated their second wedding anniversary, and welcomed a daughter named Madison five months before the attack.
Piacenti had just returned to work after maternity leave.
Four days before she died she posted a glowing photo with her baby and her husband, gushing about how grateful she was for every moment of maternity leave.
Piacenti didn't survive the attack.
Bank of America called her a valued teammate. Relatives set up a GoFundMe so Madison would know her mother’s story was about the life she built, not the random second that ended it.
As for the Tak Kam, he was just visiting his son in Brooklyn. Fortunately for him, he survived. He remained in stable condition at Bellevue while his wife told reporters the attack felt like it came from nowhere.
Police were already in the area because Times Square has a constant heavy presence, including a substation right nearby.
After the woman stabbed the second person, witnesses flagged officers, and police confronted her between West 42nd and 43rd Streets near the substation by roughly 4:26 p.m.
Once officers reached her they spent approximately four minutes talking to her and giving repeated commands to drop the two knives.
She refused, told officers she would rather kill them, waved the knives, and kept moving toward them.
Multiple officers (reports mention at least three) fired tasers. The shocks did not stop her.
Some said that she flailed briefly, but then continued advancing with a knife in each hand.
At that point two officers fired their service weapons and struck her. And at that moment, she succumbed.
The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital and pronounced dead there.
Commissioner Jessica Tisch described it as an extraordinarily dangerous situation in a crowded tourist area.
The shooting is under internal NYPD review and a separate investigation by the state Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation, which is routine whenever police use of force results in a death. Body-camera footage exists and officials said it will be released.
The whole sequence from the first stabbing to the shooting lasted about five minutes.
The woman holding the knives was Pamela Cisneros, a 49-years-old mother of three from Queens with a master's in psychology and no criminal record.
Family said she had battled mental illness for more than 20 years after her second child was born, including hospitalizations and a 2019 subway-track suicide attempt.
They thought the monthly injections had finally given her stability.
She received monthly injectable medication and had appeared more stable in recent years, working sporadically for an immigration attorney.
Her brother insisted she had never been violent. Her father said she told him not to worry just months earlier. None of that stopped the videos from turning her into the most watched person in America for 48 hours.
Bystander phones captured every second of the standoff near the NYPD substation.
Cisneros waving both blades, shouting she would rather kill the officers than drop the knives, tasers bouncing off her, then at least two shots hit her and she went down.
Those raw clips ripped across social media in minutes after the incident.
Then came the twist that sent the story into another orbit. A video surfaced that looked like Cisneros dancing in a mansion, twirling the same two knives in a pink shirt that matched what she wore in Times Square.
It racked up more than a million views before anyone realized it was a deepfake.
Someone had taken Britney Spears' 2023 prop-knife dance video, the one she filmed at home imitating Shakira, and used AI to swap in Cisneros' face, body and clothes.
The luxury house was Spears'. The apartment in Woodside was Cisneros'.
People still shared it like it was her last performance.
Fact-checkers and users piled on to call it out, but the damage was done. The real attack video and the fake dance video fed each other until the whole episode felt like it belonged to the entire timeline.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani thanked the officers and promised an investigation.
Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Cisneros had prior mental-health contacts with police but zero arrests. None of the official statements slowed the shares.
The combination of a young executive and new mother cut down on her first week back, a mentally ill woman with no rap sheet who still reached for knives in the most filmed place on earth, and an AI recreation that looked real enough to fool half the internet turned a single afternoon into a rolling spectacle.
The phones never stopped.
The comments never stopped.
And a five-month-old girl named Madison now has a GoFundMe and a million strangers who know her mother's name because the cameras were already rolling when the knives came out.
The case continues to fuel discussion about how cities handle people with long documented psychiatric histories who have never been arrested yet still reach a breaking point in public.
