Immanuel Ebenezer, also affectionately known as Noel, was once a forceful anti-corruption voice, famously proclaiming "Death to Corruptors." Yet, in a dramatic twist, it was he who found himself ensnared in a corruption scandal.
Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) executed a sting operation (OTT), which managed to arrest Deputy Minister of Manpower Immanuel Ebenezer on suspicion of extorting companies during the workplace safety (K3) certification process. This made him the first cabinet member under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration to be arrested for graft.
KPK Deputy Chair Fitroh Rohcahyanto confirmed the arrest, noting it involved alleged payments demanded from firms seeking safety permits.
The operation led to the seizure of numerous vehicles, as well as a substantial amount of cash.

Born in Riau on July 22, 1975, Ebenezer rose to prominence as the chairman of Jokowi Mania (JoMan), a volunteer group supporting President Joko Widodo during the 2019 presidential election.
His activism and support for Jokowi paved the way for his appointment as Deputy Minister of Manpower in President Prabowo Subianto's cabinet in October 2024.
However, his political career took a dramatic turn when he was arrested in August 2025 by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on charges of extorting companies in the workplace safety certification process.
Initially, KPK has not disclose the exact amount of money allegedly extorted by Ebenezer.
However, the KPK has confirmed the seizure of money, cars, and a motorcycle during the operation, specific details regarding the total value of the extorted funds remain undisclosed.

Regardless, doing the math, the confiscated items included 15 cars and 7 motorcycles, some of which include a blue Nissan GTR, one BMW, Ducati motorcycles and Vespas.
KPK also seized around Rp200 million (~$12,000) in cash, around Rp3,900,000,000 (~238,000) worth of land and buildings, zero liabilities, among others.
This kind of wealth in Indonesia isn't what Deputy Ministers can normally achieve, like ever if they rely only on their monthly salary as civil servants, plus allowances for position, transport, and other official duties, combined.

The KPK's operation, which led to the arrest of Ebenezer and 13 others, was part of a broader crackdown on corruption within the Ministry of Manpower.
In the aftermath of the arrest, President Prabowo Subianto expressed his disappointment, emphasizing the government's commitment to anti-corruption measures.
While awaiting official clarification from the KPK, the president refrained from taking immediate action against Ebenezer, underscoring the importance of due process.
The president who had built his platform on fighting corruption is carefully navigating the fallout. He has expressed respect for the KPK's procedures, stating that if Ebenezer is proven guilty, he will be swiftly replaced
The current Ministry of Manpower also echoed this zero-tolerance stance, instituting integrity pacts and promising accountability based on evidence and due process

The news of his arrest sent shockwaves through the nation, especially given his previous outspoken stance against corruption.
In his earlier years, Ebenezer was known for his fiery rhetoric, famously declaring, "Death to corruptors," a statement that resonated with many who viewed him as a champion of anti-corruption efforts.
This irony was not lost on the public; social media platforms erupted with reactions, with many netizens expressing disbelief and disappointment.
Users started sharing his slogan, alongside Ebenezer, ridiculing him.
There are videos that sharply underscore the irony, one minute championing anti-corruption, the next suspected of it.
Social media users are brimming with sarcasm, memes, and biting commentary. Many express disillusionment at the collapse of Noel’s moral narrative, how money changed the anti-corruption symbol to the very thing he once condemned.
Once a voice against the corrupt, it turned out that he himself is arrested for doing what he said was against.
People started chanting "death penalty" to Ebenezer because after all, that was what he said and wanted. Some said that he deserve that sentence, not only because of the graft, but in Indonesia where grafting is somewhat common, this can be a reminder and a warning for those who commit the condemned act.
Videos of Ebenezer crying also went viral, also to netizen's amusement and mockery.
