Google.com With A Different "G"

18/11/2016

A Google fake began popping up in Google Analytics traffic, appearing as traffic from secret.ɢoogle.com (notice the letter "G"). Its appearance in Google Analytics was sometimes accompanied by “Vote for Trump!” which appeared as the page title.

The web address' page shows the message taken from the lyrics to Money by Pink Floyd.

ɢoogle.com

Tracing the domain came to Vitaly Popov, a notorious Russian spammer who has been using a technique to send fake traffic to many unsuspecting websites for years. His own website ilovevitaly.com is a clone of the fake Google.

According to Popov, his sketchy redirect scams aren't a crime but rather a “creative marketing.”

To create the fake Google domain, he used the character Unicode 0262, known as “Latin Letter Small Capital G,” for Google.com's "G" letter.

By obtaining the ɢoogle.com web address, Popov can send his spammy redirects to those unsuspecting people since the letter G on the fake Google.com domain isn't that easy to spot.

On early 2017, Google filed a lawsuit against the spammer and won. The company obtains the ownership of this lookalike domain ɢoogle.com.
