Born in 1970, Oh Sang-ji was 1989's Miss Korea beauty pageant.
At that time, Oh was only 19-years-old, and a first-year student in the performance department of Dankook University. She relied on her beautiful appearance and unique temperament to stand out from the crowd. In the next year, she represented her country at the Miss Universe 1990 pageant.
Immediately after that, her career rose to stardom.
But unfortunately for her, in 1998, her sex tape leaked to the relatively young internet, through file-sharing websites.
Realizing her leaked sex tape, Oh asked prosecutors to investigate the case, and also circumstances that led to the widespread circulation of the sex tape. She claimed that someone had attempted to blackmail her for money.
It was later found that that the private and personal video that is later called the "Miss Oh Video", had been filmed without Oh's consent, and that her boyfriend had released it with malicious intention.
But still, the sex tape scandal caused Oh to be harshly criticized by the public.
As a result, offers for many television appearances and her acting career suddenly went to a halt.
The video that explicitly showed her having sexual intercourse with her then-boyfriend, immediately ruined her career.
Because of this, she went to the United States, to only return to South Korea three years later, in 2001.
Oh returned to her country, to again made headlines when the media found that she married Kemongsa's President Hong Seung-pyo. Oh gave birth to Chaeryeong Hong in 2003. Together with her husband and daughter, she avoided the spotlight by starting business in the fashion industry.
At that time, she spent her early motherhood in a relatively quiet life.
But Oh again made headlines in 2004, when her husband Hong was arrested on charges of bribery and embezzlement of public funds.
And this case, and also because it was realized that Hong had two ex-wives and two children, Oh divorced Hong in June 2006, four years after marriage.
Oh Sang-ji who changed her name to Oh Hyun-kyung, started using her birth name Oh Sang-ji again after the divorce.
Oh returned to the entertainment industry in 2007, through a melodrama film.
While her acting comeback was a success and the public has somehow forgotten her scandal, Oh recalled what she experienced was a "living nightmare."
Her 10-year self-imposed exile wasn't at all pleasant for her.
Oh's sex tape scandal was just one among the many sex tape scandals that leaked to the internet.
Due to the public's reaction to scandals, a number of other sex tapes have also caused numerous celebrities to have their careers ruined.
Paris Hilton was a good example, and so was Iranian celebrity Zahra Amir Ebrahim, and Vietnamese actress Hoàng Thùy Linh.
A contrast was the sex tape of Kim Kardashian, because she managed to make use of the spotlight to boost her name to become a billion dollar brand.
