YouTube was born in February 2005, founded by three former PayPal employees: Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. The idea? To create a simple way for people to upload and share videos online.
By November 2006, YouTube had exploded in popularity so quickly that Google swooped in and acquired it for $1.65 billion in stock—a move that turned out to be one of the smartest acquisitions in tech history.
At first, YouTube was about amateur clips: cat videos, funny moments, and personal vlogs. But it quickly evolved. By making video uploading free and easy, YouTube turned anyone with a camera into a potential broadcaster. Soon, it wasn't just silly clips—there were music videos, tutorials, documentaries, and original web series.
20 years later, in 2025, YouTube celebrates its 25 years of existence.

In a blog post, YouTube said that its has more than 20 million videos uploaded daily.
YouTube Music and YouTube Kids also mark their 10th anniversary this year—YouTube Music was originally codenamed "Woodstock."
In 2024, YouTube said that users averaged over 100 million daily comments, while creators received an average of 10 million "hearts" from viewers each day. Engagement is key, with YouTube videos receiving over 3.5 billion likes daily.
Additionally, more than 300 music videos on YouTube have surpassed a billion views, with the fastest to reach this milestone earning special recognition.
What started as out from the first ever video on YouTube, the infamous 19-second clip titled "Me at the Zoo" featuring co-founder Jawed Karim in front of the elephant exhibit at the San Diego Zoo, YouTube mpe claims that it has over 20 billion uploaded videos in total.
YouTube is rolling out several new features:
- YouTube TV subscribers can soon create their own multiview with non-sports content.
- More creators will be able to "voice-reply" to comments later this year.
- The new "Ask Music" feature will create personalized radio stations based on your music preferences (available for YouTube Premium and Music users).
- YouTube Premium users can now enjoy 4x playback speed on mobile, alongside other options.
- A revamped TV viewing experience is coming this summer with easier navigation and enhanced features.
For its 20th birthday, YouTube is also launching a special "Yoodle" logo, leading to a celebratory Rick Astley "Never Gonna Give You Up" mash-up.
