Twitter has been conducting investigations into its own role in the spread of extremist content and "fake news" during the 2016 election.

Here, the social media revealed that more than 50,000 Russia-linked bot accounts tweeted about the 2016 U.S. election during the campaign season. They include 3,814 accounts associated with the Kremlin-linked troll farm called the Internet Research Agency, and 50,258 accounts from automated bots linked to Russia

Following the announcement, the company is emailing 677,775 users who either followed, retweeted or liked a tweet from those bot accounts.

"Any such activity represents a challenge to democratic societies everywhere, and we’re committed to continuing to work on this important issue," the company said. "We have committed to be as transparent as possible about sharing what we have learned through our retroactive investigation into activity related to the election," the company said.

Twitter in sharing updates on Kremlin-linked manipulation of its platform, came ahead of a possible government shutdown.

This is Twitter's respond to the unevenly concern from Washington, concerning foreign manipulation of its platform. Earlier, the company missed a deadline to submit written responses to questions from Congress posed in a November 2017 hearing about Russian meddling in the election.

"I've been tough with Twitter on this, but I'm encouraged to see the company beginning to take responsibility and notify its users of Russia's influence campaign on its platform," said senator Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee and also one of Twitter's critics.

Despite the rise in Russia-backed accounts, Twitter insists that the number only accounted to just "two one-hundredths of a percent (0.016%) of the total accounts on Twitter at the time."

"However any such activity represents a challenge to democratic societies everywhere, and we're committed to continuing to work on this important issue," the company said.
