Twitch Streamer Had Her Social Media Accounts Banned Because Of 'Squid Game'

When Netflix releases Squid Game, the 9-episode South Korean survival drama series quickly propelled itself as Netflix's most-watched series.

The series revolves around a contest where 456 people in deep financial crisis put their lives at risk to play a series of children's games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion (around $40 million) prize. In a twist of the battle royale genre where people literally die, the series receive positive reviews from various reviewers, and garnered a lot of fans.

Not only in real life, as the Netflix's hit has also taken the internet by storm.

From social media networks to forums to platforms for gamers, and to anything in between, people there talk about Squid Game.

While this brings a lot of viewership and even accolades to the series, the popularity of Squid Game doesn't go well with a popular streamer on Twitch.

That, because her name on the platform is 'Squidgame'.

Despite most of her contents are on Twitch, her social media accounts were having problems due to her name using the same name as the popular Netflix series.

Since the show has become a phenomenon across Twitch, TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram, the social media platforms took step by suspending her account for safety.

According to Squidgame, whose real name is Lydia Ellery, her social media accounts were taken down because fans of the Netflix's show either mass reported her account or tried to gain access to it.

When too many sign in attempts are made to an account, or when mass-reporting is done, social media platforms can have their automated banning algorithm triggered.

Luckily for her, the incidents were temporary.

At later times, Ellery said that she had since made it back to her accounts.

She then went on to explain that the bans were because her accounts violated ttheir policies against "impersonating someone else."

That, according to the automated message she received from Instagram when attempting to log in.

Upon signing in, she received numerous messages, which many asked Ellery to give them her handle.

Fans of the show were also messaging her, because they were either "angry" she had the account or wanted the account for themselves.

Several comments across Ellery's latest posts reference "Squid Game," with some users also appearing to ask her to give them her handle.

But regardless, she thanked her followers who helped spread the word about her banned account, as it was finally "unbanned."

"Not sure what to do about my SquidGame name [...] but hopefully this won't happen again," she said.

She even considered getting a new handle due to the numerous issues she experienced because of owning one of the most sought-after social media handle on the internet.

Ellery has more than 40 thousand followers on Twitch, where she's a member of the platform's Partnership Program. She is also part of the streaming collective Yogscast, which has over 7 million YouTube subscribers.
